Speciation analysis
Greet de Loos-Vollebregt, Ghent University, The Netherlands
Abstract Speciation analysis: is the identification and quantification of the different chemical and physical forms of an element existing in a sample. This is usually achieved by combination of chromatographic separation and elemental analysis.
Determination of the total concentration of metals or metalloids is not sufficient to evaluate their impact on the environment, bioavailability and toxicity because different elemental species can have different properties and behave completely differently. This article provides a brief introduction to speciation analysis.
