Molecular MS, follow up to Atomic MS

1) All particles separated in a MS analyzer must have charge and exist as ions. Describe briefly one of the following ionization sources: 1) electron-impact; 2) chemical ionization; 3) matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization; 4) electrospray ionization; 5) fast atom bombardment. For each, be sure to indicate whether they are a hard ionization source or soft ionization source and typical characteristics of the mass spectrum.

2) Explain the fragmentation pattern observed in the mass spectrum below.

3) What is the purpose of having multiple mass analyzers in one instrument (QQQ for example)?

4) Describe some of the different ways that isotopes can be utilized to advantage in mass spectrometry? In answering this question be sure to consider both atomic MS and molecular MS.
