Abstract In case of non-routine problems, we need a new method.
Non-routine problems are problem that were not previously or earlier encountered in the same manner, this means that no ready-made solution is available. At that moment, a process is started, which could potentially lead to the development of a chromatographic method. However, before the actual method development can start, a number of questions need to be answered.

This initial stage of method development will be discussed using an extensive 'Checklist', attached to this chapter.
